Our Food project will focus on bringing our community together to share ‘rescued’ food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Supermarkets throw away millions of tons of edible food each year. It is reported that 70% of bagged salads and 40% of apples go unsold, aswell as nearly half of the bakery items! In an age where 14 million people in the UK are living in poverty, there is no sense in all this edible food not being eaten. Our Food project will involve collecting surplus food from local supermarkets and sharing it out to the community via a community fridge and/or through preparing meals and serving them on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. This project will have volunteering opportunities in all aspects.

Project 3 Objectives
  • Reduce food waste to help the environment – stop perfectly edible food from being thrown away.
  • Ensure that no one in the community goes hungry whilst there is edible surplus food available.
  • Strengthen our community by bringing people together.
  • Volunteering and work experience opportunities.
  • Educating the community/schools on the time, energy and care that has been spent on growing the rescued food and how many miles it has travelled to reach us.
  • Establishing a community fridge – enabling food that will otherwise go to waste from homes and establishments to be shared among the community.
  • Prepare community meals when there is sufficient amounts of food on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis.
  • Skill sharing workshops over shared meals.
  • Cooking workshops.
  • Community food growing e.g. Using herbs from our community herb garden and vegetables from our green spaces.
